One of the essentials for being completely dressed is wearing socks with shoes.  They provide warmth and comfort for your feet.  Because the feet are a major source of sweat in the body, sock must be absorbent.  In fact, the main purpose of socks are to absorb this sweat.  The original material used in ancient times to make socks was leather or animal hair. As times progressed these foot coverings were machine knitted or hand knitted in limited colors according to the source of the fiber, wool, silk, or cotton. Only the rich could afford them.

As time progressed, the knitting machine was invented in 1589. Fabrication was six times faster than knitting them by hand.  In 1938 nylon was added to the material used in manufacturing.

In modern times, meaning today, they are available in thin or thick yarn.  Thin fabric for summer or warm weather. Thick fabric made for cold weather.  Light colors are worn mostly for sports and casual wear. Dark colors worn primarily for dress. There is a choice of crew style, which fits above the ankle, or choose the  longer style which covers the calf.

The socks of yesteryear had no elastic to keep them up.  Garters were use to keep them from falling down around the ankles.

Today socks are manufactured in may different lengths, colors, and designs.  Everybody and his bother, sister, niece and nephew wear socks.  They express personality, and personal taste. 

They have become a fashion icon in their own right.  They are worn with trousers, shorts, dresses, any attire.  There are different variations such as a design separating the big toe from the rest. These are split toe and can be worn with flip flops.  Yes, some people in other countries wear them with flip flops, the Japanese.
